Ever since she could hold a pen, Flavia Chan has been drawing rainbows, hearts and cats with spikes. Her kindergarten teacher suggested she attend Emily Carr University of Art & Design for Fine Arts. Her childhood included a large amount of time vegetating with many picture books (which her mom stored in a fridge) and her beloved television set. The TV and pictures from the pages of children’s books fueled her imagination and continue to inspire her today. Flavia’s style can be described as “cute with a smidge of sadness.”...

Ben Sellick is a multidisciplinary artist based in Toronto. His recent works are assemblages of thousands of tiny pieces of paper. Sellick cuts and produces the pieces with a three-hole-punch and desktop spiral binding machine. Then, using an X-Acto blade, tweezers and glue, he meticulously and methodically arranges each individual piece, one at a time, into various shapes, patterns and forms. The process is a highly repetitive performative act which demands concentration, commitment and dedication. Neural Bridges consists of five layers, each representing a bridge design: arch, truss, suspension, closed arch and double trunnion. The bridges are broken, no longer connecting – a metaphor for a breakdown in the brain’s ability to communicate with itself; yet also speaking to resiliency, as demonstrated by the strength of the centre bridge, the double trunnion, which remains intact. The artist was inspired by research on the function of brain cells called microglia, and growing evidence that the breaking of important synaptic connections by microglia may contribute to neurodegenerative diseases....

Jieun June Kim is a Toronto-based, Korean-born painter, muralist and art producer. She graduated with honours from Duksung Women’s University in Korea, receiving a BFA in Korean Painting and Fashion Design, and received her MFA in Visual Arts from Washington University in St. Louis. She has exhibited her paintings around the world since 2010 at notable galleries and events, exploring the idea of “home” as an immigrant. Kim is also interested in creating a safe space through street art, and has created numerous murals with various arts organizations, such as Street Art Toronto as well as for corporate partners, including Samsung, Up Canada and Collective Arts Brewery.
