Artist Harold Feist has applied a thick, translucent skin of acrylic paint made up of folds and layers of varying colour which flow over and through one another. The paint is made of varying thicknesses of titanium coatings on suspended mica particles which produce hues and shades that change depending on the angle of view and the quality of light. Feist said this shifting behaviour of colour is analogous to the neoplastic nature of the brain's ever changing, interconnected structure. https://www.haroldfeist.com/...

Laura Bundesen has had a love affair of 30+ years with fabric, thread and colour. Using these elements, she creates richly textured mixed media pieces, with a current focus on Neuro Art. Working with a functional map of the human brain as a reference, Bundesen recycles scraps of fabric into a collage and then embellishes it with hand embroidery, trim and beads, working directly on artist’s canvas. Improvising as the work progresses, she keeps the mystery of the brain’s inner workings in mind. Her contemporary 2-D Neuro Art pieces are then stretched and painted. Bundesen’s work has been purchased by neurosurgeons, neurologists and neuroscientists, as well as survivors of traumatic brain injury and brain cancer. Bundesen lives in Massachusetts and exhibits widely in the Northeastern United States....

Artist Erich Ferguson deliberately minimized the artwork and design in this piece and included negative spacing to create a feeling of loneliness, which is associated with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. The design was kept centred, streaming from the pineal gland (3rd eye), where black and white photographs symbolize lost or diminished memories. The images have significance: The CN Tower is the exhibit location; the bank tower pays homage to sponsor Scotiabank and its support for music and art programs; and the pine tree is an iconic image by a Group of Seven artist....

Rooted in the concept of material memory, Brain 5.3 is the product of extensive experimentation in blown glass. The final form and texture of the piece is the result of a unique process involving the iterative reworking of the primary glass gather. The glass brain is consistent in its overall shape, but increasingly complex in its textural appearance. The final piece is the direct and unique result of the manufacturing process, which traces the history of its formation. A very special thank you to the Harbourfront Centre and their resident glass artists Kristian Spreen and Silvia Taylor for their help. stacklab.ca...
