The artist suffers from generalized anxiety and ADD. Composing exact shapes in traditional mediums is the only time she feels she’s not ruminating and it forces her to focus strictly on the task at hand. This piece compares the meditative practice Shayla uses to calm her mind while contrastingly representing the slow fade into the complicated mind of an Alzheimer’s patient. Dually, it parallels the proven benefits of art therapy for the artist and for those with Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Shayla Bond is an illustrator and artist from Kentville, Nova Scotia. She graduated from Nova Scotia College of Art & Design in 2013 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in Fashion and Textiles. She is best known for her vibrant digital illustrations which feature detailed line-art and offset pops of colour. Shayla works digitally but finds meditation and escape in painting exact shape compositions in traditional mediums.
